Meet Dr. Sarah Commons
Sarah is a compassionate and dedicated occupational therapist driven to provide holistic, family-centered, and affirming care for all children and families. She is originally from Richmond, Virginia. She studied Exercise Physiology at the University of Lynchburg, earning her Bachelor of Science. In 2023, she earned her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from the University of Mary Baldwin. Sarah is nationally certified by NBCOT and has her BLS certification from the American Heart Association. She is also an S.O.S. (Sequential Oral Sensory) trained feeding therapist.
In 2022, Sarah co-presented at the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association Child & Youth Conference on occupational therapy's role in postpartum maternal health and wellness.
For the past three years, she has worked for a children's hospital in Virginia, providing full-time care in its outpatient clinic and as-needed care in its eight-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit. She has worked extensively with a wide range of diagnoses, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD/ADD, Down syndrome, Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, developmental delays, genetic abnormalities, and Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. In the inpatient unit, she provided care to patients who had experienced strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, burns, and brain tumors, as well as patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Sarah is passionate about working with children and their families. Her goal is to ensure that all children feel empowered, validated, and connected through the use of play. She aims to provide client-centered, effective, and holistic treatment plans that allow families to continue empowering their children throughout development.
Outside of clinical work, Sarah enjoys world traveling, spending time with family and friends, walking her dog, and being an active member of the community.
